Running the Platform Glossary
30 terms from the Health Tech book's Running the Platform part, each defined in a line and linked to the chapter that explains it.
- A/R tie-out: the conversion check that the new system's converted balances, credits included, equal the old system's accounts receivable report at the final conversion (Data Migration & Conversions).
- AB 3030: the 2024 California law requiring a disclaimer and a path to a human on generative AI patient communications about clinical information, unless a licensed provider reviewed them (AI in Health Tech).
- Ambient scribe: software that records a visit, transcribes it and drafts a note for the clinician to edit and sign (AI in Health Tech).
- BCA (Business Continuity Access): Epic's downtime toolset, a read-only copy of the chart and printed downtime reports from designated PCs (Operations, Support & Downtime).
- Clean claim rate (CL-1): HFMA's key: claims that pass edits without manual intervention over claims accepted for billing (Health Tech Metrics).
- Conversion: moving a practice's data from one practice management system or EHR to another, by test conversion, mapping and a final conversion (Data Migration & Conversions).
- Data use agreement (DUA): the contract a limited data set requires, binding the recipient to permitted uses and to not identify or contact anyone (De-identification, Research & Data Use).
- Days in A/R, net (FM-1): HFMA's key: net patient receivables over average daily net patient service revenue for the last three months (Health Tech Metrics).
- Decision support intervention (DSI): ONC's term for EHR features that support clinical decisions, evidence-based or predictive; HTI-5 removed the source attribute requirements for them (AI in Health Tech).
- Designated record set: the medical and billing records a provider maintains about individuals, which access and amendment rights reach, including after a system switch (Data Migration & Conversions).
- Downtime kit: what a practice works from when its systems are down: printed schedules and reports, contact lists and paper forms (Operations, Support & Downtime).
- EHI export: ONC's certification criterion § 170.315(b)(10), single-patient and population export of all electronic health information a product stores (Data Migration & Conversions).
- Expert Determination: HIPAA de-identification by a qualified expert who finds a very small risk of identification by the anticipated recipient and documents why (De-identification, Research & Data Use).
- FHIR facade: a FHIR API published over a product's own relational model, with stable IDs, real versions and writes through the domain (Health Tech Architecture).
- GRR (gross revenue retention): a cohort's recurring revenue a year later capped at its starting value, over its starting revenue; excludes expansion (Health Tech Metrics).
- Inbound message: an HL7, FHIR, X12 or vendor message stored as received, unique on the sender's ID, before it's parsed and applied (Health Tech Architecture).
- Limited data set: PHI with 16 kinds of direct identifiers removed but dates, town, state and ZIP kept, usable for research, public health or operations under a DUA (De-identification, Research & Data Use).
- Location (vendor metric): a physical office under active subscription; a multi-office customer counts once per location (Health Tech Metrics).
- MAP Keys: HFMA's 29 standard revenue cycle KPIs in five groups (Health Tech Metrics).
- NRR (net revenue retention): a cohort's recurring revenue a year later, expansion included, over its starting revenue; new customers excluded (Health Tech Metrics).
- PCCP (predetermined change control plan): a plan, authorized with a device, describing changes that can later be made without a new submission (AI in Health Tech).
- Practice notice: a recorded notice to a practice about maintenance, an outage or a security incident, with its deadline and recipients (Operations, Support & Downtime).
- Privacy-preserving record linkage: joining records about the same person across sources by keyed tokens made where the data is held (De-identification, Research & Data Use).
- Safe Harbor: HIPAA de-identification by removing 18 kinds of identifiers and having no actual knowledge the rest identifies anyone (De-identification, Research & Data Use).
- Sale of PHI: a disclosure for remuneration from or for the recipient, prohibited without authorization except in listed cases (De-identification, Research & Data Use).
- Sensitivity label: a record-level marking (Part 2, reproductive, mental health) checked on every read and outbound path (Health Tech Architecture).
- Source attributes: model-card information about predictive decision support that HTI-1 required certified EHRs to expose and HTI-5 removed (AI in Health Tech).
- Support session: a time-boxed, reasoned, logged delegation of a staff member into a practice's data, scoped to a ticket and a patient (Operations, Support & Downtime).
- Sync agent: software on a practice's server that reads from and writes to its practice management system for a cloud platform (Health Tech Architecture).
- Test conversion: a full trial conversion into a test database that the practice reviews before the final (Data Migration & Conversions).
