In the Field Glossary
43 terms from the Field Operations book's In the Field part, each defined in a line and linked to the chapter that explains it.
- Certified payroll: the weekly payroll report a contractor submits for prevailing wage work, per project, signed by someone accountable (Prevailing Wage and Public Work).
- Commercial motor vehicle (CMV): a vehicle the federal motor carrier rules apply to, by weight or use (Fleet, Inventory & Safety).
- Davis-Bacon and Related Acts: the federal laws setting prevailing wages and fringe benefits on federally funded construction contracts over $2,000 (Prevailing Wage and Public Work).
- Device outbox: the technician app's ordered queue of commands made offline, sent when the device is online (Offline-First Sync).
- Dispatch console, schedule board: the dispatcher's view for assigning, moving and monitoring the day's work (Dispatch & the Day of Service).
- DVIR: a driver vehicle inspection report (Fleet, Inventory & Safety).
- ECFA (Employee Commuting Flexibility Act): the amendment that lets commuting in a company vehicle within the normal commuting area, under an agreement, stay unpaid (What Counts as Hours Worked).
- ETA link: an expiring, single-visit page showing the customer where the technician is (Dispatch & the Day of Service).
- Events per 1,000 miles: safety events normalized by distance driven, reported beside a vendor's safety score so long rural routes compare fairly (Operating Metrics).
- Evidence rule set: the versioned rules for what a visit must capture before it can complete (photos, signature, readings, forms), per service type or task, snapshotted onto the visit (Proof of Service).
- Field payment: a payment taken by the technician; a card captured offline is
captured_offlineuntil the processor authorizes or declines it, and cash or a check iscollecteduntildeposited(The Technician App). - Flat-rate pay, production pay: a fixed amount per job or task, or a share of the job's revenue, regardless of hours; hours are still recorded for minimum wage and overtime (How Technicians Are Paid).
- Form answer set: one completed form on a visit, tied to the form definition version it answered (The Technician App).
- Form definition: a versioned checklist or reading form (sections, fields, units, validation), so a form filled offline stays bound to the version it was filled on (The Technician App).
- Geofence: a boundary around a property whose entry and exit mark arrival and departure (Dispatch & the Day of Service).
- Heat trigger: a temperature or heat index at which a state rule requires shade, cool-down breaks, check-ins or other measures, held as a dated rule per jurisdiction (Heat).
- Hours of service (HOS): federal limits on driving and on-duty time, with a short-haul exception (Fleet, Inventory & Safety).
- Hours worked: the time the law requires to be paid, including job-to-job travel, waiting and required training, but not an ordinary commute (What Counts as Hours Worked).
- Inventory movement: one append-only line in the stock journal: an item moved into, out of or between stock locations, used on a work order, or counted (Fleet, Inventory & Safety).
- Jeopardy: a visit computed to be at risk of missing its window or SLA (Dispatch & the Day of Service).
- Labor classification: the craft a worker's hours on prevailing wage work are paid under (an electrician, a laborer, a registered apprentice), recorded per time entry (Prevailing Wage and Public Work).
- Manage by exception: a dispatch console that surfaces only the visits at risk rather than asking anyone to watch every technician (Dispatch & the Day of Service).
- Materials of trade: small quantities of hazardous materials carried for the work, under lighter transport rules (Fleet, Inventory & Safety).
- Nonproductive time: time a California piece-rate worker spends not producing pieces (the drive to the first stop, a restock), paid at no less than minimum wage (Piece Rate in California).
- Offline-first: an app that works from a local store and syncs when it can, rather than caching a server it depends on (Offline-First Sync; the field scope is in The Technician App).
- Par level: the stock a vehicle should carry of each item, driving restock (Fleet, Inventory & Safety).
- Piece rate: pay per unit (a pool stop, a lawn, a home cleaned), with hours still recorded and overtime owed at half the resulting regular rate (How Technicians Are Paid).
- Prevailing wage, wage determination: the minimum wage and fringe for a classification on public work, published on SAM.gov as a determination the work order carries (Prevailing Wage and Public Work).
- Proof of service, proof of delivery: the evidence a visit happened as recorded: photos, signatures, notes, scans and location (Proof of Service).
- Reading: a measured value captured on a visit (a pressure, a chlorine level, a refrigerant charge), typed or from a probe, with the instrument and its calibration date (The Technician App).
- Regular rate: total remuneration for a workweek divided by hours worked, including commissions, spiffs and promised bonuses; overtime is computed from it, not from the hourly rate (Overtime and the Regular Rate).
- Rest and recovery period: California's paid rest and heat recovery time for piece-rate workers, paid separately at the higher of minimum wage and the week's average hourly rate (Piece Rate in California).
- Sealed visit: a completed visit frozen as a hashed version that reports render from; later changes are attributed amendments, never edits (Proof of Service).
- Service report: the document sent to the customer after the visit, rendered from the completed record (Proof of Service).
- Stand-down: one operation that stops work in an area for a time range (a storm, a heat warning), returning occurrences to the backlog and lifting as a unit (Dispatch & the Day of Service).
- Stock location: a place inventory sits: a warehouse, a branch shelf or a van (Fleet, Inventory & Safety).
- Sync conflict: two edits to the same record made apart; in the field, facts from the field win, office plans win, and transitions go to review (The Technician App; the general rules are in Conflicts).
- Tank mix: two or more products mixed in one tank and applied in one pass, each still recorded as its own application (Regulated Materials).
- Telematics: devices in vehicles reporting location, mileage and driving events, from vendors such as Samsara, Motive and Geotab (Fleet, Inventory & Safety).
- Time entry: a classified span of a worker's time (
time_entries: job, travel, waiting, break and so on), derived from raw time punches and stamped with whether it's hours worked and the rule that decided it (Technicians: Time, Pay & Labor Rules). - Time punch: a raw, immutable clock record from the device (shift, travel, on job, break) with both clocks and a location; corrections are new rows, and they are classified into time entries (
time_entries) for pay (The Technician App). - Vehicle: a van or truck in the fleet (
vehicles), assigned to drivers over time and treated as a stock location; not a resource kind (Fleet, Inventory & Safety). - Visit evidence: one captured proof item on a visit (a photo, a signature, a scan) with its hash, signer, location accuracy and device and server times (Proof of Service).
