Running the Platform Glossary
34 terms from the Workplace & Collaboration book's Running the Platform part, each defined in a line and linked to the chapter that explains it.
- Accessibility conformance report (ACR): A completed VPAT with documented test results, rating each criterion as Supports, Partially Supports, Does Not Support or Not Applicable (Accessibility & Localization).
- Adoption Score: Microsoft's organization-level score of how a tenant uses Microsoft 365, in equally weighted categories over a 28-day window (Workplace Metrics).
- App protection policy (MAM): Intune policy that protects corporate data inside a managed app, with or without device enrollment, including selective wipe (Desktop & Mobile Clients).
- Blocking floor: The client version below which a vendor refuses to serve a desktop or mobile client, such as Teams' page for clients more than three months old (Desktop & Mobile Clients).
- CART: Communication Access Real-time Translation, human-generated live captions brought into a meeting by a captioner (Accessibility & Localization).
- Cell (tenant placement): A slice of the system (servers, caches, databases) serving a fixed set of tenants or a zone, so that a failure stays inside it (Building It Yourself).
- Client boot: The call a chat client makes on connect to load channels, preferences and unread state, and the critical path in both Slack incident reviews (Reliability, Outages & SLAs).
- Cloud Solution Provider (CSP): Microsoft's reseller program, with indirect resellers buying through distributors and direct-bill partners buying from Microsoft (Billing, Seats & Resellers).
- Colo (Figma): A group of related tables that share a shard key and physical layout so joins and transactions within one key still work (Building It Yourself).
- Co-terming: Aligning the end dates of a customer's subscriptions so they renew together, usually by prorating add-ons to the existing term (Billing, Seats & Resellers).
- Domain claiming: Verifying a corporate email domain and taking control of the accounts on it as managed accounts (From Self-Serve to Enterprise).
- Drain: Shifting traffic away from a zone or cell quickly and incrementally, as Slack does by reweighting Envoy clusters (Building It Yourself).
- Expansion signal: Product usage or account metadata (domain spread, plan limits, governance interest) that suggests an account is ready for a sales conversation (From Self-Serve to Enterprise).
- Fair Billing Policy: Slack's rule that members inactive for more than 28 days stop billing, with prorated credits (Billing, Seats & Resellers).
- Large-customer count: The number of customers above a revenue line (such as $100,000 ARR), the common public proxy for enterprise success (Workplace Metrics).
- License reclaim: Finding seats with no recent activity and removing or reassigning them (Workplace Metrics).
- Logical shard: A partition of data (often a schema) mapped onto a smaller number of physical databases, so capacity changes are remaps (Building It Yourself).
- Maximum Quantity Billing: Atlassian's monthly billing on the highest seat count reached during the cycle (Billing, Seats & Resellers).
- Migration mode: A state of a destination container that accepts back-dated, attributed imports and is explicitly completed, as in the Teams import API (Migrations, Imports & Switching).
- Post-incident review (PIR): The vendor's published account of an incident's cause, timeline and fixes; Microsoft commits to a preliminary PIR within 48 hours for broad incidents (Reliability, Outages & SLAs).
- Private offer: A negotiated price for one customer transacted through a cloud marketplace, with listing fees by contract value (Billing, Seats & Resellers).
- Proration: Charging or crediting a seat change for the fraction of the period remaining (Billing, Seats & Resellers).
- Scatter query: A query without the shard key that must ask every shard, cheap while a cache hides it and dangerous when it doesn't (Building It Yourself).
- Seat ledger: The append-only record of seat-count changes and their causes from which billable quantities are derived (Billing, Seats & Resellers).
- Seat utilization: Active members as a share of paid seats on a subscription (Workplace Metrics).
- Service health: A tenant-scoped incident and advisory feed for admins, alongside the public status page (Reliability, Outages & SLAs).
- Shared container host: The one tenant that stores a container shared across organizations, which other organizations read through (Building It Yourself).
- Siloing: Making a service take traffic only from its own zone and call only servers there, so a zone can be drained (Building It Yourself).
- Soft delete (tenant): Marking a workspace deleted with a delay and purge date so it can be restored, the main change after Atlassian's 2022 outage (Reliability, Outages & SLAs).
- Switching (EU Data Act): A customer's move between data processing services, with contract clocks and, from January 12, 2027, no switching charges (Migrations, Imports & Switching).
- Tenant-to-tenant migration: Moving users and content between two tenants of the same product after a merger or divestiture (Migrations, Imports & Switching).
- True-up: A periodic count of seats used above a committed quantity, invoiced as overage (Billing, Seats & Resellers).
- User-minutes: Microsoft's SLA unit for collaboration services: incident minutes multiplied by users affected (Reliability, Outages & SLAs).
- VPAT: ITI's Voluntary Product Accessibility Template, in 508, EU, WCAG and INT editions (Accessibility & Localization).
