Meetings and Voice Glossary
34 terms from the Workplace & Collaboration book's Meetings and Voice part, each defined in a line and linked to the chapter that explains it.
- Ask mode: a workplace check-in setting in which a user's automatically detected work location isn't shared until the user opts in (Rooms, Devices & the Hybrid Office).
- Async video: a recorded screen-and-camera message shared as a link and watched later, replacing a live meeting (Async Video & Screen Recording).
- Auto attendant: a voice application that answers a business number and routes callers through a menu (Business Phone & Contact Center).
- Auto-release: freeing a booked room automatically when nobody checks in within a set window, or when all but one invitee declines (Rooms, Devices & the Hybrid Office).
- Breakout room: a sub-session split off from a meeting that participants move into and back from without rejoining (Meetings & Video).
- CCaaS (contact center as a service): a cloud contact center with queues, routing, IVR, agent tooling and quality management (Business Phone & Contact Center).
- Cloud Video Interop (CVI): Microsoft-qualified third-party gateways that let SIP and H.323 room systems join Teams meetings (Meetings & Video).
- Compliance recording: automatic, policy-driven recording of a user's calls and meetings, owned by the company, for regulatory capture (Recordings, Transcripts & AI Notes).
- Congestion control: the sender-side algorithm that estimates available bandwidth from packet delay and loss and sets the media bitrate (Meetings & Video).
- Convenience recording: an ad hoc recording a user starts and manages, stored with the meeting's files (Recordings, Transcripts & AI Notes).
- Direct Guest Join: a room system joining another vendor's meeting through that vendor's web client as a guest over WebRTC (Rooms, Devices & the Hybrid Office).
- Direct Routing: connecting Teams Phone to any carrier through a certified session border controller the customer or a partner manages (Business Phone & Contact Center).
- Dynamic emergency calling: sending a 911 call with a location resolved from the client's current network connection rather than a fixed registered address (Business Phone & Contact Center).
- eCDN (enterprise content delivery network): caches or peer-to-peer delivery inside a customer's network that keep a broadcast event from pulling one stream per viewer through the internet edge (Meetings & Video).
- End-to-end encryption (E2EE): encryption with keys held only on participants' devices, so the service forwards media it can't read and can't record, transcribe or summarize (Meetings & Video).
- Explicit recording consent: a policy that requires each participant to agree before they're recorded or transcribed (Recordings, Transcripts & AI Notes).
- Firm order commitment (FOC): the losing carrier's confirmation of the date it will release ported numbers (Business Phone & Contact Center).
- Ghost meeting: a recurring room booking nobody attends, holding the room until released (Rooms, Devices & the Hybrid Office).
- Inform mode: a workplace check-in setting in which automatic work location is shared unless the user opts out (Rooms, Devices & the Hybrid Office).
- Lobby (waiting room): where people who don't bypass admission wait until an organizer admits them to a meeting (Meetings & Video).
- Location Information Service (LIS): the customer-maintained map from access points, switch ports, switches and subnets to emergency addresses (Business Phone & Contact Center).
- Messaging Layer Security (MLS): the IETF group key agreement protocol (RFC 9420) used for end-to-end encrypted meetings (Meetings & Video).
- Notetaker bot: an app that joins meetings as a participant, often from a user's calendar, to record, transcribe and summarize them (Recordings, Transcripts & AI Notes).
- Operator Connect: connecting Teams Phone to a certified carrier that has already integrated with Microsoft, enabled from the admin center (Business Phone & Contact Center).
- Resource account: the mailbox-enabled identity a room or shared device signs in as, instead of a person (Rooms, Devices & the Hybrid Office).
- Selective forwarding unit (SFU): a media server that forwards each sender's streams to the receivers that need them without decoding them (Meetings & Video).
- SFrame: per-frame end-to-end media encryption (RFC 9605) that leaves routing data visible to an SFU (Meetings & Video).
- Simulcast: a sender encoding the same source at several qualities so an SFU can forward each receiver the one it can take (Meetings & Video).
- Speaker identification: attributing speech to enrolled people using voice profiles, a form of biometric processing (Recordings, Transcripts & AI Notes).
- SVC (scalable video coding): one video stream encoded in layers that an SFU can strip for weaker receivers (Meetings & Video).
- Town hall: a broadcast-style event in which attendees watch with a delay and interact through Q&A rather than microphones and cameras (Meetings & Video).
- UCaaS (unified communications as a service): the cloud business phone system sold with chat and meetings, priced per seat (Business Phone & Contact Center).
- Viewership retention: views at each point of a video as a percentage of its most-watched point (Async Video & Screen Recording).
- Workplace check-in: automatic setting of a user's actual work location from corporate Wi-Fi or a desk peripheral, off by default and without history (Rooms, Devices & the Hybrid Office).
